2 Peter 3:1-7

Bibles go me to the book of 2 Peter. 2 Peter chapter 3 is where we will be this morning, 2 Peter chapter 3.! But here we are entering into this third chapter and for the sake of time this morning we will only be looking at the first seven verses.

So 2 Peter chapter 3 starting in verse 1 and going down to verse 7. If you are physically able and desire to do so would you join with me as we stand together and we read the word of God with one another.

Peter says, Where is the promise of his coming?

For ever since the fathers fell asleep all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation. For when they maintain this it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago.

And the earth was formed out of water and by water through which the world at that time was destroyed being flooded with water. But by his word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.

Let's pray. Father we thank you for this day. We thank you for your faithfulness and goodness that you displayed to us in various ways and at various times. Father one of the greatest gifts you have given us is the gathering together of the saints which are called the church.

We thank you that we can come for encouragement. Lord we can come to encourage others. We can come to be built up and to build one another up. We thank you for the fellowship of the saints.

And we praise you that when we gather together you are here as well. So it is your very presence that we lean upon. And we ask that you would give us understanding and discernment as we have read your word and heard your word.

We know that your word longs to speak into every heart and mind. And we pray that by the power and presence of your spirit you would have the freedom to do so. May we understand it.

Lord and yes may we see its truth. But more than that may we have a desire. A willingness to apply it to our lives for your glory and yours alone. And we ask it all in Jesus name.

Amen. You may be seated. During the second chapter of 2 Peter. Peter has kind of deviated off course of where he began in the first chapter.

He interrupted his line of thought. And it was a necessary interruption. Because at the conclusion of 2 Peter chapter 1. He was speaking of the testimony that the saints possessed.

He was speaking of the testimony of personal experience. In particular he was speaking of his own personal experience. Which we would refer to as the mountain of transfiguration.

He was assuring them of the confidence they could have in his words. Because of his experiences. And also in connection to our own experiences. And then he moves from experiences to the truth that we possess in the word of God.

He says our greater confidence rests in the prophetic word of God. The Old Testament and the New Testament. The words that were moved as Brother Ivan shared this morning.

By the influence of the spirit. As the men of God were moved by the spirit of God. To pen the word of God. And we know that it is absolutely true. And then he pauses for just a moment.

Because there is a settled reality. Not only in church history. But also in church present. And will continue until church future. And that is as much as there is the true prophet.

There will also be false prophecy. So throughout the second chapter. He is given great detail and description to the false prophets. Which had in the past arisen among them.

And the false prophets that they could expect to rise among them in that day. And also we too in our day. And he has been looking at the character and the attributes of the false prophets.

So that we would know who it is that we are fighting and wrestling against. And so that we can be guarded. But now in the third chapter. He moves back to his intended purpose.

His purpose for writing. His purpose for the letter that is before us. And it is the purpose to affirm the people of who they are. And how they shall live.

He tells us that this is the second time he has written to them. According to this same purpose. We could go back and read 1 Peter. I encourage you to do it.

At some point. Read the letter of 1 Peter. And the letter of 2 Peter together in one sitting. It will not take you long. And it is worthy of the read. For you will see this repetition of words.

And this repetition of purpose. And this repetition of things. Peter was preaching the same message once again. To the same people.

And he was encouraging them. And here in the third chapter. He does exactly what he does at the end of 1 Peter. Is he shows them the foundation on which they stand for faithfulness.

So I want you to see this morning. The foundation for faithfulness. Because if we're going to be faithful people in times such as these. Then we need to be concerned about the foundation on which we stand.

Faithfulness is not going to get easier the longer we walk with Christ. It may get easier personally. Because we know more of Christ.

We experience Christ. We understand Christ a little bit more. Hopefully so. In our walk in latter days than in our former days. He knows more of us.

And there is this process called sanctification. Where he is making us what we should be. But the reality still exists. That the world is not getting to be a better place.

Faithfulness is harder. Not because of the circumstances within the believer. But because of the circumstances outside of the believer.

It is a difficult season to walk in truth. When the world declares that there is no such thing as truth. It is difficult to walk in purity. When the world is not concerned with purity.

But rather concerned with pleasure. It is difficult to walk with assurance. When the world is so full of confusion. And Peter is writing to people.

And I am thankful for this. That when the letters within the pages of the New Testament were written. They were written by men of God. Through the Spirit of God. To the people of God.

That were living in a broken world. The letters applications were to be lived out. There was rebuke. Sure. There was correction. Absolutely. But the rebuke and the correction within the church.

Was for the purpose that the church would live as it should. In a broken and fallen world. Probably one of the most harsh letters. Or the harshest letter we will ever read.

Is 1 Corinthians. It is there. You know that Paul is handing people over to Satan. For the destruction of their flesh. And he is really rebuking the church. They are living in such atrocious sins.

That they live just like the world. But the reason Paul is concerned. What the church looks like on the inside. It is also the place by the way. In 1 Corinthians. Where people were dying. Because they were taking the Lord's Supper.

In an unworthy manner. The reason that he is concerned. What the church looks like on the inside. Is because living and looking like the world. Reduces your impact upon the world.

And he was building up the church. So that the church could dictate to the world. How then it shall live. Rather than the world dictating to the church.

Unfortunately what has happened. The further we go in history. The world begins to dictate to the church. How then we shall live. And the church just humbly says.

Okay if it must be. Fewer and fewer are the Martin Luthers. Who would stand up and say. Here I stand. I can do no other. And if you do so.

You're counted. As a bigot. As an enemy. And as one to be opposed. But we must be assured. That we can live faithfully.

In a broken world. But we can only do it. On standing. On a true foundation. What foundations do we have. For faithfulness. We know that there's no other foundation.

That can be laid. Other than the one. Which has already been laid. Paul would say. That is Jesus Christ. Certainly. We must stand upon Jesus Christ. He alone is our foundation. But what does that look like.

In application. What does it mean. And how do we do it. What are the nuts and bolts. If you will. In doing that. And it is here. That we see these. Epistles. At the end of scripture.

That give us that. Nuts and bolts. Application. Of standing on that foundation. Peter here is concerned. That the believers. Would understand. That as they're standing. On that foundation.

They would realize. Their unique position. The very first thing. You need to know about. Confidence. And faithfulness. Is the first. Foundational element. We stand upon.

Is the position. We assume. Who are we? Who are we? How do we define ourselves? We know that when Peter.

Introduces his letter. And it's one of the things. This past week. As I was. Speaking with a group of believers. I was telling them. In my early days. I used to jump right over. The introductions. Of every letter.

And I would just move on. Let's get to what they wanted to say. And I failed to realize. That the introductory comments. Were also spirit led. So that when Paul says. Paul and Cephas.

And all these other things. And when Paul said. Paul and Timothy. To the saints. Which are at Corinth. I was like. I would just look over that. To the fact that he calls them. And saints are important. And so. Now. When we look at the introduction.

Of this letter. We see that Peter. Refers to himself. As an apostle of Christ. But he's first. A slave of Christ. He is a slave. And an apostle. And we have a faith like his.

So. We would say. Well. Then the position is. We are slaves of Christ. And we are apostles. Are sent out from Christ. Not holding to. And hearing the office. Of the apostles. But having the same equipment.

That is being sent from him. And we would assume. That's our position. And we're right in that. But we have a multifaceted position.

We have one that is very unique. And Peter makes a transition. That if we're not careful here. In the third chapter. We will miss. There are probably some of you in the room.

That have caught it. Because I highlighted it. To a few of them. This past week. In a different passage. In which. James says. The very same word. James uses this word.

After speaking about sin. And the enticements of sin. And he uses it there. As he's going through the book of James. James 1. I believe it's 18. Where he says it there.

And Peter makes this transition. Here in the third chapter. He introduces a new word. To us. If you will. By the way. Repetitions in scripture. Are important. This is a word.

That was used one other time. In this letter. In reference to Christ. He uses this word. In reference to. The Mount of Transfiguration. It is there in the first chapter. That he says.

That he was on the holy mountain. Which the father said. This is my beloved son. In whom I am well pleased. He refers to Christ. As the beloved son. And now.

Here in the third chapter. He introduces. Our unique position. The believer's unique position. Where he says. This is now. Beloved.

Beloved. Notice that pause. He had not referred to them. As beloved. Prior to this. But in the third chapter.

He will refer to believers. In such a manner. Five different times. In five separate verses.

Believers. Will be referred to. As beloved. Here in this first verse. In the eighth verse. In the fourteenth verse. The fifteenth verse.

And the seventeenth verse. Do you think. Peter. Wants us to pay attention. To the reality. We are. Beloved. In his first.

Letter. That he wrote. These same believers. He introduced. Spiritual realities. To them. He challenged them. To set themselves aside. And to be sanctified.

For Christ. He called them. To fix their mind. And their hope. To be steadfast. And immovable. And then he says. Therefore. My beloved. He admonished them.

Through the. Unique position. In which they hold. That they are beloved. Don't let this. Simple word play. Escape your notice.

That the same way. The heavenly father. Referred to the son. On the mountain. Of transfiguration. Is the same word. Same very word. That the spirit. Moved Peter.

To refer to the believers. In Christ. James refers to them. Much the same way. Therefore. My beloved. Over and over again.

There is the repetition. Of this word. As it describes. The position. Of the believer. Why? Because the enemy.

Longs to attack us. And in the world. We are not very much loved. At least. Not with the love. That is this type of love. We are loved. Maybe with the euros love. The erotic love.

Or the sinful love. Or the love of pleasure. Or the love of. If you do something for me. I'll love you back. But the true love. I mean. The sacrificial love.

The word beloved. Means. To be one. Who has a special affection. Set upon them. Or to be in a special. Position. With.

So it's literal meaning. Is this. That in Christ. We are in a special. Position. With holy God. And are the objects.

Of his special affection. That is garnered. Towards us. Therefore. How then shall we live?

We are beloved. Of the father. He tells the same believers. In first Peter. The fifth chapter. You remember the passage. Right? That says. That the devil prowls around.

Roaring around. Seeking whom he may devour. But if you resist him. He will flee from you. You remember that. But do you remember the verse. That comes after that. And it's simply this. For God cares.

For us. Resist him. For God cares. For us. You say. Well I'm going to do what I want to. Who cares?

I'm going to live however I want to. Who cares? Friend. Even if nobody in the world. Cares for you. But in Christ. The word of God says. God cares for you. You are beloved.

All too often. We excuse our actions. Because we say. Well no one cares. Or nobody is looking. Or nobody notices. Don't let the enemy. Whisper that lie in your ear. For the one who is over all.

And in all. And through all. And created all. For his own glory. Calls you beloved. Don't forget your unique position. In Christ.

Don't forget it. Because by assuming this position. We are reminded. Of the empowerment. Of the empowerment. That we have. He has told us.

That because we are beloved. We have been empowered. To escape the snares. And the lust of this world. Because we are beloved. We have been equipped. With all that is known. Through the full knowledge of Christ. Because we are beloved. We can do.

The remainder. Of the challenges. That set before us. Sure. Is salvation. Holy and completely. And totally. Of the Lord God Almighty. Absolutely.

But in Christ. We are beloved. By him. We are objects. Of his special affection. It is not. That we have a special love. For God. It's that God.

Almighty. Has a special love. For us. You can say. That the challenge. The calling. Is to love the Lord. Your God. With all your heart. With all your mind. With all your soul. With all your strength.

And your neighbor. As yourself. That's where all the. Law and the testimony hangs. That's the testimony of Christ. That's absolutely true. But you will never. Ever. Out love. The heavenly father.

Who has a special position. For you. In Christ. The only way. We can love. Is because we are loved. The only way.

We can. Display that. Is because it has already. Been displayed to us. You say. Well no one's made me feel that way. Praise God. Scripture doesn't talk about.

Your feelings. It talks about your position. In Christ. You are beloved. You say. I don't feel loved. It's okay. Tell your feelings. To catch up with the truth. That has been proclaimed.

In Christ. You are beloved. Too much of this world. Is based upon feelings. And sensations. I can give you all kinds of. Goosebumps and sensations. In various ways.

And we can be. As S.M. Locker says. Forever chasing the bubbles. Of excitement. But the bubbles. Of excitement. Fell in comparison. To the declaration. From heaven. And the declaration. From heaven. Is that in Christ.

We are beloved. Settle it in your mind. Tell it over and over. To your heart. Tell your feelings. To catch up with the reality. Because the word of God. Is true. No matter how you feel about it.

And the firm foundation. We stand on. Is that I have a special position. And special relation. With the Holy Father. Through Christ. And I do it.

Because I'm beloved. This is who we are. This is our position. And because we have this position. There's always. The what then.

Right? There's an application to it. Because you cannot live in that reality. The reason we see so much spiritual growth. Is because we have so little. Spiritual assurance. If you really understand.

That you're loved. If you really understand. That the Father. Has set a special affection upon you. If you understand. Who he is. That says this about you. And if you understand. Who it is. That calls you to himself. Then you would pursue him.

With all of your heart. With all of your soul. With all of your mind. And with all of your strength. We would be foolish. Not to do so. But rather. We have belittled the one. Who says he loves us. And we have tried to make him like us.

That what? He's just one of a multitude of others. No. He is the one. Who has created all others. And so. When we come to the realization. And the assurance. That in Christ. We are beloved. Then it leads us.

To the second thing. And it is. That we take the preparations. Necessary. I'm so thankful. For our elders. And our elders. Who stand before you. Each and every Sunday. And pray. And I rejoice. When the songs.

Or the prayers. That are offered. Prior to my coming up. Are completely in line. With what I'm about to share. And brother Ivan's prayer. This morning. Was speaking of. When Christ gave this testimony. That the Holy Spirit.

Would come. And he would bring to mind. The things that had been taught. And that he would bring. To remembrance. But look at the purpose. Of Peter's writing. Peter says. This is now beloved.

The second letter. I'm writing to you. In which I am stirring up. Your sincere mind. By way. Of reminder. Peter says.

I'm trying to help you. Remember. I'm stirring it up. In first. Peter. And second. Peter. The same theme. Peter is trying.

To remind the believers. Of who they are in Christ. And how they should live. In the world. Both of them have. Themes of. Rejecting the world's lust.

And putting off. These desires. And waging war. Against the flesh. And resisting the false prophet. And standing strong. Faithful. And it is all for the same person. Why do you do that? So that you can enter into glory. And so that you can enter into heaven.

No. Let's go ahead. And say this here. Your faithfulness. Your faithfulness. Is not. So that you can secure. Your eternity.

Your eternity. Is secured in the fact. That you are beloved. In Christ. Just settle that. Because if you think. Your faithfulness. Is so that you can secure. Your eternity. Then you are laboring.

At a job. You can never. Complete. Never. Which one of us. Can earn our way to glory. None. All of our works.

Are like filthy rags. But. The reasoning. For our faithfulness. Peter says. Is that Christ. May.

Be glorified. That God. Would get the glory. That he.

Would be exalted. Among mankind. Why is the church. Called to faithful living. That he. That he gets the glory. Not us. So that broken vessels.

Show. The glorious. Content. Within them. Not so that the vessels. Can shine. And everybody can say. Oh look at that person. So that the vessels. Would look ugly. And messed up.

And they would say. But look at what's filling. That person. That he gets the glory. Not so that we can. Have a good reputation. Not so that we can. Have it all together.

Not so that we can look good. On the outside. Friend. Let us be broken. On the outside. As long as he is glorified. In eternity. Through our living. It is his glory.

That is the motivation. For our faithfulness. And sometimes. He gets the greatest glory. In our darkest valleys. And sometimes.

He gets the greatest glory. In our hardest moments. And sometimes. He gets the greatest glory. In our hardest struggles. And we're called to faithfulness.

So that he's glorified. But how do we do that? We have to be prepared. For the battles we face. And Peter says. I'm calling your sincere minds.

That just means your true minds. Christ. He said. These people. You really. You really do know Christ. This is a church to the believers. Right? This is a letter to the believers. He said. You know Christ. I know you're sincere. I know you struggle.

And this is another comfort. That I find in our text. Is that sometimes. Sincere believers. Can live in insincere ways. Right? We can mess up. We fall. We falter. And he's not challenging.

He's not. He's not contradicting. He's. He's. Sure. He's building up. And he's. Confronting. Sincere.

But here's what you need to do. You need to remember. The holy prophets. And the. Word. Of Christ. Delivered. Through. The apostles.

So he's. He's. I'm stirring up your mind. So that you would remember. The word of God. True. It is the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit's job. Is to come. And to bring to mind. The word of God.

What we have been taught. But I've heard it said this way. Friend. Listen. You have to give the spirit. Something to work with. The preparation is on us. The preparation is on us.

I've read. And I've heard of pastors. And I've known some of them personally. They say. Well I'm not going to prepare. I'm just going to get up. And preach. Whatever the spirit leads. Well by all means. Sometimes the wrong spirit leads.

Sometimes it's the spirit of the flesh. Sometimes it's the spirit of the tickling ear. Sometimes it's the spirit of the congregation. And I say. Well you better fill yourself up. So that the spirit has a manner. In which to lead you.

I spoke on this. Not too long ago. I've had people. Come to me before. And say. Pastor. You have. Such a photographic memory. I remember one dear saint. He'd come to me. He said. He said. It's so much easier.

He said. It's unfair. You have a photographic memory. And I love this brother dearly. And I looked at him. I said. No. You're absolutely wrong. I do not have a photographic memory. Ask anybody that really knows me. I will forget things. In the blink of an eye.

Your pastor's wife. Is constantly reminding her husband. Of things that he needs to do. Why? Because I do not have a photographic memory. In fact. People come and say. Man. Your scripture memorization is awesome.

No. Here's a full confession to you. I am really. Really bad at scripture memorization. I'm really bad at it. But what I do.

Is I get into the word. And I get into the word. And I get into the word. And I get into the word. And I get into the word. And when I stand up. I trust. That the spirit. Will bring to mind. What I have been putting in. Even if I can't recall it.

Instantaneously. And I know. It scares people. Sometimes. I tell people. It's like. When I preach. It's like a Rolodex. I feel like it's just spinning. No Rolodex. Somebody have no idea. What Rolodex is. On you. New ones. It's like spinning through your contacts.

Okay. It's going through your contacts. On your iPhone. No Rolodex. It's just spinning. And it's going. And I said. Sometimes like the spirit. Just puts it spinning. And goes. Boom. Right there. And there are times. When I'm preaching. I'm like.

Wow. Where'd that come from? And I know it's not of me. If I do not put it in.

In there. It will never come out. Out here. Friend. You have to do the preparation. Before you get into the battlefield. You have to be ready.

Because. The reminding. The remembering. The calling to mind. Those truths that are there. If you have not been in the word. Putting it in. Then there will be nothing that comes to mind.

When you need it. You need to stand on the foundation. Of preparation. You say. Oh. We want our pastor to prepare. Well the word of God. We want all believers to prepare.

For the armor of God. Has but one sword. And it is the word of God. Every other piece of the armor. Is for the defensive position. So that you can resist the attacks.

You have one. In which to fight against the attacks. And it is the word of God. The sword of the spirit. Which is the word of God. And too many people. Too many believers. Go into battle.

With no offensive weapon. For they do not know the word of God. And they wonder. Why they can endure. But they can never defeat. It is because they have no sword to swing.

Friend. Do the preparation. Put in the word. Over and over. And over again. You say. Well I don't always understand it. Good news for you. Is the author lives inside of you.

In Christ. You are indwelt with the Holy Spirit. And you don't have to understand it. You ought to seek to understand it.

You ought to seek to know it. Sometimes you read. And you might just get one word. Sometimes you may. Just get one chapter. Sometimes you may get one verse. I don't know. But do it. Put the word in there.

Build the discipline in your life. For preparation. Why? Because the battleground. Is a reality. That is going to continue to come. Each and every single day. And we stand in faithfulness.

Because we have something. To bring to mind. Stir up. One another. To remember. The word of God.

Has something to say. To every challenge. We ever face in our life. Every one of them. And the author. Living inside of us. Longs to tell you. What he's already said. There are.

People have asked me. Why do we see. So many supernatural visions. And dreams. Outside of America. And I say. Because in America. We have all the. The greatest. Full revelation. Setting on too many shelves.

And too many tables. Not being opened. Why will God do the supernatural. When the most supernatural. Of them all. That is the word of God. The full revelation. Is setting on the shelf.

Do the work. Wear it out. Let him speak. Let him speak truth. Over and over. And over again. It is the preparation.

To stand firm. On a foundation. Of faithfulness. And finally. Because of that preparation. Friend. Listen to me. You must. Have persuasion. What a man.

Or a woman. Is most persuaded of. Will dictate. How they live. The reality. Of their life. It says here. In our text. That you should remember.

The word spoken. Before him. By the holy prophets. And the commandment. Of the Lord and Savior. Spoken by your apostles. Know this. First of all. That in the last days. Mockers will come.

With their mocking. So we are not surprised. We are not surprised. Mockers will come. With their mocking. Who say. Are we living in the last days. Well Peter thought. We was living in the last days.

Then I feel like. We are living in the last days. Now we are just living. In an extension. Of the last days. You say. Well how long is it going to last. Well good news is. Verse 8 picks that up. Okay. We will get to that later. But know this.

We are not caught off guard. But notice what it says. They will come. With their mocking. Doing what? Following. After their own lust. And saying. Where is the promise.

Of his coming. Forever since the fathers. Fell asleep. All continues. Just as it was. From the beginning of creation. Now stop right there. For just a moment. And I love what Peter is saying here. Peter says.

We can get bent out of shape. About those who mock. We can get bent out of shape. About all their mockery. And all these things. He said. But at least. They are living consistent. To what they are persuaded of. They do not think.

Christ is coming back. And they live accordingly. And they are mocking. Saying. He has been waiting so long. There is no way. He is coming back. So they are living. According to their persuasion. And at least.

They are living consistent. They believe. That this world. Is what it is. And all it is. And they are living. According to the lust. Of this world. For that is all.

They are persuaded of. But the shocking reality. The shocking reality. Is when believers. Profess such things.

But do not live. According to that. Because they are not. Persuaded of it. He says. For it escapes. Their notice. Don't let it escape. Your notice.

By the way. If you ever want to. Have an affirmation. For the Genesis account. Of creation. Here it is. That by the word of God. The heavens were created. By the word of God.

They were created. Came into existence. Destroyed by the flood. This is the second. Mentioning of the flood. In this little book. And that by the word of God.

The present heavens and earth. Are being reserved. For judgment. He speaks of that. In first Peter. And so here's what he's saying.

If we are genuinely. Persuaded. Of the fact. That God created. The heavens and the earth. And judged them on the flood. And we see that. As it really is. And we are persuaded. By the fact.

That there is coming. A day of reckoning. There will be a day. Of accounting. Where Christ indeed. Returns again. Causes church home. And brings the world. To an account. And all these things. Will be destroyed by fire.

We see it in first Peter. All that can be shaken. Will be shaken. And burned up by fire. If we are really. Persuaded of that. Just as we find. In other letters. How then. Shall we live?

Quick question. Do you believe. Do you believe. There is going to come. A day. When everything. In this life. That is not eternal. Is consumed.

By fire. Where do you spend. Most of your investments at. And the things.

That are going to get burned up. Or the things. That are going to endure. Whatever. Whatever you are most persuaded of. Will dictate. How you live.

It will. Every time. If we believe. That this world. Is the end goal. And this is all there is. Then we will live.

According to the lust. Of this world. If we believe. That this world. Is a place of ministry. And missions. And God has put us here. To bring glory. And honor. To his name.

And to glorify his son. Among his creatures. And he has put us here. That he may be exalted. And in that exaltation. He entrusts us. With gifts to use. For our comfort.

Our pleasure. Sure. Because he cares for us. And for our usefulness. And our tools. And their tools. They are just such tools. That we don't. We don't possess them. We just entrust it to them. And we are stewards of them.

And that he does this. To bring him glory. And if everything. In our life. Is to bring him glory. Because someday soon. We will stand before him. And give an account. Of all those treasures. Entrusted to us.

Then I promise you. We live different. But we spend a lot of our time. Trying to persuade us. That's not really the case. Why?

Because most people around us. Think that's nuts. You're nuts. Have you ever been told. You're nuts. For doing things. For the kingdom. It's okay.

It's okay. My mentor used to tell me. Be such a Jesus freak. That people think you're crazy. Took him up on that. A lot of times. I've been told I was crazy. It's okay. I am just a little bit.

But what are you most persuaded of? Thank you for your love.

We're so overwhelmed by the fact that you call us beloved in Christ. And so we ask, how then shall we live? And Father, we pray that through the moving and dwelling of your spirit, that you would show each and every one of us.
